RAM Towing Technology

RAM Towing Tech

When it comes to towing capabilities, Ram is the best. Ram trucks are known for being high quality work trucks with a sense of luxury, and they are perfect for tackling any task that it encounters. Let’s take a look at what makes the Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 so good at towing, and let’s break down the technology involved.

First, let’s see the engines that power these trucks, as this is an important factor in towing capabilities. The Ram 1500 offers the choice of a 3.6L Pentastar V6 gas engine with Class-Exclusive eTorque mild-hybrid powertrain, a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6, and two powerful HEMI V8 options. Next is the 2500 and the 3500, which have three engine options available for selection. The first is a standard 410 horsepower 6.4-liter V8. Next are two variants of a Cummins diesel engine. The first produces 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque, while the second produces 400 horsepower and a whopping 1075 lb-ft of torque, and is only available on the 3500.

When it comes to the towing capabilities of these engines, they all perform exceptionally well. The lowest towing capacity on the 1500 is 7,730 pounds, while the highest towing capabilities goes up to 12,560 pounds. On the 2500 the towing capacity starts at 14,370 pounds, while the max goes up to 16,870 pounds. Finally, the 3500 when fully equipped produces an insane amount of towing capacity, getting up to 37,100 pounds! This means that the fully equipped Ram 3500 could tow a fire truck. Impressive.

The engine and truck you choose have a large effect on the towing capacity you get, but so does the Smart Towing technology that you can equip to your Ram truck. These towing technologies include trailer reverse steering control, air suspension system, forward collision warning system, cargo view and backup cameras, trailer tow mirrors, blind spot monitoring with rear cross path, and trailer detection. Let’s go more in depth into what each of these systems entail.

Forward Collision Warning System – This system has sensors on the front of the truck that sense when a vehicle in front of you slows down and alerts you with both visual and audio warnings, as well as activating the brakes for you.

Trailer Reverse Steering Control – The available trailer reverse steering control couples with the 360° surround-view Camera system and simplifies the trailer reversing process by allowing you to use the trailer steering knob to control your trailer’s direction as you back up while the system controls the truck’s steering wheel.

Trailer Tow Mirrors with Spotter Lamps – Available trailer tow mirrors with spotter lamps are mounted on arms that can be folded out, giving you a wider and clearer view when towing a trailer.

Air Suspension System – The available air suspension systems level the body of the truck during use and are height adjustable to make hitching up gooseneck, fifth wheel, and conventional trailers easy.

Cargo View and Back-up Cameras – Both available cargo view and back up cameras display views on the central infotainment display to assist with properly lining up your hitch and trailer.

Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path and Trailer Detection – This system scans the blind spot zones beside and behind the vehicle to help ensure trailer safety while maneuvering, while automatically sensing and accounting for the length of the trailer.

There’s also additional systems such as electronic stability, trailer sway control, adaptive cruise control, trailer tire pressure monitoring, and electronic roll mitigation. If you’re looking for the best trucks at towing, look no further than a 2022 Ram.
