Big, heavy-duty pickup trucks are some of the most impressive vehicles available in the United States. Whether you’re looking at something completely factory built, or something customized and personalized with aftermarket upgrades, big trucks are awesome. Our big truck is, of course, the 2022 RAM 3500 and one of its biggest competitors is the GMC Sierra 3500HD. We thought we’d give you a little bit of a rundown on what sets these two full-size, heavy-duty pickup trucks apart. So, check out the comparison below.
There are a number of different powertrains available in these two trucks. The RAM 3500 comes standard with a 6.4L HEMI V8 engine capable of generating 410 horsepower alongside 429 pound-feet of torque. For the GMC Sierra 3500HD, its standard engine is a 6.6L V8 that can generate 401 hp and 464 lb-ft. of torque. You can upgrade the RAM to a 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 with 370 hp and 850 lb-ft. or the GMC to a 6.6L V8 Turbo Diesel with 445 hp and 910 lb-ft. Finally, you can upgrade the latter RAM engine to offer high output, increasing power to 420 hp and 1,075 lb-ft.
Determining the best pickup truck to suit your needs will depend on a great many factors, from the engine, to the drivetrain, to the cab style, bed length, transmission, and so on. The best trailering RAM 3500 you can get tows up to 37,090 pounds while hauling up to 6,560 lbs. But if you prefer hauling to trailering, then you’ll want to opt for the best max payload truck which is 7,680 lbs. but it can only trailer up to 18,210 lbs. Maximum rates for the Sierra 3500HD are 20,000 lbs. towing or 5,662 lbs. hauling.
The 2022 RAM 3500 has a host of available safety technologies, including: Adaptive Forward Lighting System, 360° Surround View Camera, Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop, LaneSense Lane Departure Warning and ParkSense Front & Rear Parking Assist. In contrast, the Sierra 3500HD offers HD Surround Vision, Lane Departure Warning, Front & Rear Park Assist, IntelliBeam headlights plus several alerts similar to those offered by the RAM 3500.
