When it comes to heavy-duty pickup trucks, the number of options dwindles quite a bit from the abundance of light-duty choices on the market here in America. Even still, there are plenty of great heavy-duty models to choose from, including our own RAM 2500 and its long-time rival the Chevy Silverado 2500HD. Both of these trucks are extensions of “the big three,” which represents the three most popular pickup trucks in the country - including the RAM 1500, Chevy Silverado 1500 and Ford F-150. These heavy duty counterparts ramp up the power and capability over their light-duty siblings, but how do they fare against one another?
Both heavy-duty pickup trucks come with rather similar standard engines. For the RAM 2500, it finds a 6.4L V8 engine beneath its hood, while the Silverado is powered by a slightly larger 6.6L V8. While they offer very similar performance, the RAM 2500 does technically tip the scales by offering 410 horsepower to the Silverado’s 401 hp. Both trucks do offer available turbo-diesel engine options in addition to their standard powertrains.
Despite the fact that the RAM 2500 offers slightly more horsepower than the Silverado, the 2500HD is well-known for its incredible capabilities. The bowtie brand’s pickup truck can haul anywhere from 14,500 pounds to 18,500 lbs. through trailering, while the RAM has smaller numbers ranging from 10,520 lbs. to 15,220 lbs. As for max payload, the Silverado ranges from 3,614 lbs. to 3,900 lbs, while the RAM ranges from 1,564 lbs. to 4,012 lbs.
The biggest advantage that the RAM 2500 has over its competitors is hands down its style. The RAM pickup truck is well designed mixing a luxury aesthetic with the rugged looks required of a heavy-duty pickup. In the opinion of many on the internet, the Silverado 2500HD cannot compete. In addition, the class interior of the RAM 2500 is packed full of near-luxury amenities, content and technology sure to enhance your experience.
